How to measure a distance between 2 places in a Google Map

Let’s do an actual illustration - that’s the way to learn things.

Go to Google Maps:
http://maps.google.com.my/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Or to the Google site:
http://www.google.com.my
and then at the top row, tab on the “Maps."

Type in “Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Jalan PJU 1A/5, Petaling Jaya, Selangor” at the location box; and click the "find" symbol.

You may have to type in “Malaysia” if you are logging in from outside the country.

Select a hit that is identical to the above address or resemble the map below or you just simply want to read the instruction.

Now, let’s do the following procedure.

#1 : Enable the Maps Measurement Tool by clicking the “Maps Lab” at the bottom of the pane.

Under the dialogue box, enable all features although in this exercise we are doing one or two of its features; and remember to “Save Changes” at the bottom row. Now you would notice a “ruler” icon (next 4 pic)appearing next to the distance scale indicating the map measurement has been enabled.

#2 : Hide the Left Hand Panel for the time being. Click on the “arrow-left” symbol”.

#3 : Click on the “minus” symbol(zoom-in) to reach 100m(or 50m) in order to get closer to the road level for our measurement purpose

#4 : Hide the labels too to reduce “congested” view. Click on the “arrow-down” symbol beneath” Traffic”, and de-select “labels.”

: Except for this red symbol, this is what you get after the above 4 steps. The symbol represents the starting point of the measurement.

Above is the route (highlight in red) that we are about to measure the distance between “Start” and “End.” The above route is an example of a jogging route.

Okay let’s start.

Click on the “right-arrow” symbol at the upper left hand to un-hide the right-hand panel.

With this step done, there are valuable information on the pane such as option to use Metric(km) or English(mile); Total distance covered; Delete last point (or undo last action)- very useful for correction; and Reset (i.e. to start all over).

Place your cursor at the place where the red symbol is located; Click (usually referring to the mouse’s left button) on “start” and the next click will be along the route as shown in the map below.

The next several steps is to complete the running route as indicated above and ends at the start. Remember to use “delete the last point” provided in the left-hand panel if an error is made. The distance is about 1.88852 km which is a good estimate. Now go ahead to do another route that you always wanted to do.
